All Crafts Breakfast – Past and Present

Largo Breakfast

The (Origina1) Largo Retiree Breakfast was held on January 6, 2011 at the Boris Family Restaurant located on Ulmerton Road at 09:00 hours. The following Retired Letter Carriers were present and or accounted for: Thom Hart, Bill, Gene Wainscott, Dana Bigley, John Silvia, Ed Joyner, Sam Miller, Wayne Moore, John Blackard, John Bourlon, John Hammock and Keith Northup.

The amount of Postal Experience setting around the tables

totaled 268 years. It is good that the Holidays are over and now things settle down for another year. It seems that some of the old war stories are making a comeback this year. All had a good time and look forward to seeing each other next month.

Director of Retirees Thom Hart passed out the yearly retired planners from National. It is nice to see that National is at least thinking about all the carriers who helped to make it what it is today

President Les Stroup failed to show up this month, we thought he would buy after winning the $25.00 last month. I guess he felt we eat too much for his pocketbook. It would be nice to get in his wallet once in awhile.

We wish a happy birthday to Keith Northup. John Silvia added year to his goal last month. The retirement check is nice and they send it overseas part of the year at least.

We were sorry to hear about the passing of Carrier Vickie Vigue this last month. She was so young and enjoyed her grandchildren so much. She will be missed by all who knew her. We wish the very best to her family during this trying time.

The next scheduled breakfast of the Largo Original Retired Letter Carriers will be held on February 3, 2011 at 09:00 hours at Boris Family Restaurant on Ulmerton Road. We welcome all Largo Letter Carriers (Retired or active) to join us.

Largo All Craft Breakfast

Largo’s All Craft Retirees Breakfast was held on January the 5th @ Denny’s on Missouri. Attendance was fairly high with seventeen retirees and two guests and they were: Keith Northup, Dana Bigley, Kathy Warner, Mary Bintliff, soon to be retiree Cherie Mayer, Don Brierly, Janice Kohl, Les Stroup, Carl Bakelman, Betty & Gerry Williams, Bill Nilsson, Mike Pizzorusso, Ken Tennis and his lovely wife Pauline, John Bourlon, Thom Hart, OD Elliott, and yours truly Bernie.

This was the first breakfast of the new year and it also marked the beginning of our 8th consecutive year of hosting these retiree breakfasts! We have come a long way from 2004 with just five non retirees to over seventy-five retirees to date. We encourage all Largo & Seminole newly, and those who have already retired but not yet attended, retirees to come and join us. It’s only for one hour a month. You won’t regret it! It was nice to see a few new faces like Ken Tennis and Janice Kohl, who both retired in 1997. Many forgotten memories from Largo past surfaced at this breakfast with Ken Tennis’s accountable room stories. John Bourlon had some of those forgotten stories as well when he was President of the Branch. Funny! You Bet! Other topics covered were the slow fall and very fast rise of the price of gas. Yeah right, winter blend my b_tt. Also, the No COLA increase but higher premiums on health benefits translates to a cut in pay. Hold on retirees, I’m afraid we are in for a wild ride this year, a contract year.

On the health and welfare of our retirees, it was reported to me, via email from Bob McKenna, that Clarence Bluhm had passed away in December. He was just 93. For those of you who don’t remember him, he could case and carry any route supervision would put him on and do it in 8 hours or less. What a machine and an extremely nice guy. He was an icon. My good friend, Keith Northup, was in attendance and he seemed to be handling his medical problem with a very upbeat attitude. Look up grit or guts in the dictionary and you will see his picture! Retirees, if there are any health and welfare issues you want me to know about so I can keep our retirees informed, please contact me.

Attendance broke down as follows: seventeen carries, two clerks, no custodial engineers or management.

Birthdays for the month of January were: Rudy Lang, Lydia Bryant and Harry Davis. The retiree who has been retired the longest was John Bourlon (‘96) and the shortest was Gerry Williams (2010) finally! Cherie Mayer won the free breakfast compliments of our local union.

So that’s a rap for our first breakfast of 2011. Our next breakfast will be on February the 2nd, 9 a.m., Denny’s (no not Elliott’s house), on Missouri. Please come give us a try and join us for breakfast. You might be pleasantly surprised! To all our retirees, have a healthy, happy and safe New Year! Enjoy The Hell Out Of Life! Bernie

We had a nice turnout and were there ever a lot of stories overheard.

Executive Vice President Joe Henschen and new Second Vice President Don Lyerly joined us for breakfast and Don drew the “winning” breakfast ticket. (I won)

Sure was a lot of discussion on plans for the new year. Hope they work out for them.

Great to say there was not much talk of “illness”.

Those who did not come this month should make an extra effort to attend, you might win a “Free Breakfast”

The Weather warned up this month – dare I say it was “balmy”? OK – I said it!
